Dr S.R.Wadia has tremendous sucess rate in treating leucoderma cases. I found this article in Homeopathic links , however i never found this article elsewhere in web His experience, research and insight in the disease will definitely guide all of us in exploring the new dimension in treating leucoderma cases.

LEUCODERMA- A SOCIAL STIGMA

Leucoderma, which causes white patches on the skin, has been known for centuries. Though it is not contagious, it causes a lot of embarrassment, particularly in females, who regard it as a social stigma. Hence, from a cosmetic point of view its treatment is important.
Human skin has different hues in different parts of the world The colour of the skin is due to a pigment called melanin, which is more in coloured people. When this pigment decreases, the skin turns white. The pigment increases when the parts are exposed to sun or ultraviolet rays. Hence, physicians ask their patients to expose these parts to the sun after applying their medicine. However, this effect is short-lived and at times may cause blisters. One of my patients who applied Bavchi powder mixed in water had huge blisters which had to be dressed. When the blisters healed, the skin still remained white.
COMMON TREATMENTS USED IN THE PAST AND PRESENT.

1. Psoralent compounds and Amimajus (Unani) were hailed as a great research. Side effect-digestive upsets and blisters with itching all over the skin.
2. Corticosteroids have many side effects and cannot be given for long.
3. Cuban cure for leucoderma is a placental extract and as a lotion is applied locally on the patches and then exposed to ultraviolet light.
4. Injections too have been tried, unsuccessfully. Research has to be made with Homoeopathic potencies.

HOMOEOPATHIC VIEW POINT

Causes The most important cause according to my findings and statistics are
1) Chronic amoebic dysentery and intestinal parasites. 50 percent of patients give a history of worms preceding the diseases.
2) Other skin disease suppressed by external application and by internal allopathic drugs.
3) History of repeated vaccinations as in frequent travellers and those in the Army and Navy.
4) P / H or F / H of Tubercular infection.
5) P / H or F / H of Diabetes.
6) Shock, anxiety, mental strain. Case have been mentioned, where continuous air raids in a war have turned the skin white in a couple of days!
7) A young Christian lady visited me for white spots. On questioning, she told me that her husband was at sea and she had two children to look after. She earned a little by giving tuitions but that was taken away by her mother in law. There was a constant friction between them. She burst into tears while narrating the story. Her deep grief was responsible for the white patches.
8) A family history of Leucoderma is seen in many patients. So I think that marriage between two individuals with Leucoderma should be avoided. Dr Mofti gives a case, where a young lady developed vitiligo during her pregnancy. The ladys mother had vitiligo. Her child also developed vitiligo at age of 6 years.
I had a case of a 20 year old girl with leucoderma, where there was a history of leucoderma in the grand mother as well as mother.
9) Cauterisation done for warts or moles may result in subsequent leucoderma. A friends daughter had extensive white patches all over the body after cauterisation of warts.
10) Miasmatic conditions: a) From among the three miasms, Psora is maximally responsible for the condition. This is mainly in cases where skin complaints like eczema, ringworm, scabies etc have been suppressed by ointments. In such cases our greatest antipsoric remedy Sulphur is of great help.
b) For Sycotic conditions with a history of vaccination, Thuja found to be useful.
c) The third miasmatic condition, ie Syphilis: has bilateral patches, stomatitis and aggravation at night, Mercury preparations, or preferably Lueticum is useful.
d) In some cases where there is Tuberculosis in the family and the patient suffers from chronic colds and cough, then Tuberculinum and Bacillinum are useful.
There are some cases of Leucoderma, where there is no family history of Leucoderma, but the patient had suffered from gastro- intestinal diseases such as amoebic or bacillary dysentery, gastroenteritis, enteric fever, etc which were treated with antibiotics and chemo-therapeutic drugs. Here, probably as a result of the powerful drugs the intestinal mucosa is affected, causing a deficiency of Tyrosine, leading to a disturbed melanin formation. The choice of remedies here is Nux-vomica, Bacillinum, Chelidonium or Phosphorus followed with constitutional remedies.
12) In a paper on Vitiligo and albinism published in the Indian Journal of Medical Science 27-86, 1973 Dr J C Shroff, reported the findings of a relationship between Vitiligo and several autoimmune disorders like pernicious anaemia, thyroid disease and diabetes mellitus.
13) (i) Genetic predisposition is recognised. A number of vitiligo patients do give family history of the disease.
(II) Neurogenic factor- There is some evidence to suggest that the loss of pigment could be attributed to the failure of neural or neurochemical control of melanocytes, resulting from damage to nerve fibres.
(III) Vitamin B Complex- Since nutritional factors affects the process of pigmentation, direct proteins, vitamins and certain metals should not be lost sight of.
14) According to Vaidya, Journal of Gujarat University, B-Science of August 1975, the reasons for depigmentation are unknown. Many factors eg genetic, dietary, autoimmune bodies, vitamin deficiency, neuroendocrinal mechanisms, neurodermatosis and inhibition of some intracellular enzymatic process have been suggested. According to Siddick (1962) heredity seems to play a positive role and Fitzpatrick (1965) believes it is an irregular dominant trait.
15) Biochemistry and Endocrinology- Melanin formation depends on enzyme tyrosinase. Since optimum body levels of Vitamins are a prerequisite for Tyrosinase activity (Breathnach, 1971), Leucoderma is often associated with deficiency of Vitamins (Sieve, as cited by Sulzberger et al, 1965)
Gonadal, adrenal, thyroidal as well as pituitary dysfunctions have been associated with skin depigmentation (Robert, 1951; Learner, 1959) and specific antigens in Saliva of vitiligo patients). Female hormones taken for a long time are often said as a block to curing Vitiligo.
16) Minerals: Copper has the highest catalytic activity on Tyrosine (Fleshch and Rotham 1948). It is more active than Manganum and 100 times more active than Ferrous ions. (Scalon 1969). The Tyrosin molecule itself contains 0.2 percent copper and is synthesized in the ribosomal fraction of melanocytes. Ghoshal (1959) has reported significantly high level of Ceruloplasmin (the form in which 90 percent of copper occurs in blood) in Leucoderma patients. Our studies of the blood mutabilities of normal and Leucoderma patients, have shown that both copper and ceruloplasmin level are low in Leucoderma patients. (V C Shah, NJ Chinoy, M V Majumdar and K S Sharma, Zoology department, School of Sciences, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad 380009)
17) Diet-Flesh of unhealthy animals mainly ham, bacon, pork harbour a lot of parasites, eggs and cysts. When digested they release tiny worms in the intestine and do havoc in Human beings. If cooked pork is pink it has not been properly cooked. The meat must be white to be safe. Citrus fruits should be avoided. Papaya and mangoes can be taken. Nonvegetarians can take fish, meat and eggs in moderation but no milk products. Chapattis with bran instead of white bread is recommended.

Drugs helpful in my Practice
At the outset, I may mention that the constitutional remedy works the best, if we can find matching symptoms. LAter, an intercurrent remedy or a miasmatic remedy can be given.
1. Thuja-occ- I use this remedy very frequently. My reasons.
a) A number of vaccinations and modern drugs have been given especially in children. Here Thuja works as an antidote and clears the sycotic background.
b) Symptoms of Thuja are present not only children but adults too have dreams of falling, startling in sleep, have warts on the face or body, loss of appetite and dullness since those innoculations. After three doses of Thuja 200, the patients general condition improves. Now is the time to give the indicated remedy which starts working well.
c) My third reason for giving this remedy, is in cases of history of tuberculosis or respiratory diseases in the patient. According to Dr Barnett in his book on tumours on pg 315, Bacillinum will not act very well unless Thuja is given first. Vacinosis evidently comes in the way, very much the same as Hahnemann mentions for Psora and the use of Sulphur as an intercurrent remedy.
2. Sulphur- This is an important remedy and also the greatest antipsoric. It will also cure (along with psora) the suppressed sycotic and syphilitic miasmatic symptoms. If there is a history of suppressed shin diseases, diarrhoea, dysentery, jaundice, typhoid and other fevers then this remedy is of help. But the most important thing is that symptoms of Sulphur should be present like.
a) Heat of palms, soles, eyes, anus, vulva, vagina and top of head.
b) Generally patient is hot yet sometimes could be chilly.
c) Irritability and obstinacy can also be noticed.
d) Books describe Sulphur as a ragged philosopher but that is not found in all the cases. Due to poverty or lack of toilet facilities he may not take a bath and look dirty. The remedy can be given in clean patients also if other symptoms agree.
3. Bacillinum- The third most important remedy is Bacillinum or Tuberculinum. Many times we get cases, where the patient suffers from a chronic cold, with an occasional history of haemoptysis. Loss of weight, loss of appetite, flat chests of boys and girls, prominent ribs and clavicles etc may be other symptoms. We could get a family history of TB or pleurisy. We ask a patient of Sulphur repeatedly for a history of skin diseases, similarly we must ask a Bacillinum patient for a history of chest diseases. Many patients who are not clear or intelligent give a history of pleurisy more often than a history of TB. So we must try and get the symptoms in a tactful manner. Tuberculinum-bovinum and Drosera act better if there is a history of glandular or bony tuberculosis. The first case baby V G had bone TB for which she was given the drugs mentioned above. Now 19 years old, she goes to college in perfect health.
4. Nux-vomica- is required initially when the patient comes after taking a lot of the Modern drugs. It acts as an antidote to clear the background. This remedy also helps the patient to get over the problem of ineffectual urge for stool and also improves his digestion. It however has no specific action on the white spots.
5. Sepia- useful particularly in females. Besides the usual white discolouration, these patients have irregular menses-late, scanty, painful, menses in young girls, leucorrhoea, pruritis, dyspareunia and frigidity.
Most patients give H-O morning sickness, vomiting, nausea, travellers headache. Swings, merry-ground etc also affect her. The remedy removes the above symptoms and the white spots become pink in colour, but do not disappear completely. Sepia requires to be complemented with Nat-mur, to complete the cure.
6. Merc-Sol- is indicated in cases with a history of dysentery with mucus and blood, jaundice and liver enlargement. These patients are worse at night with salivation and have a syphilitic miasm. They perspire in bed and do not tolerate extremes of climate.
7. Acid-nit- I have used this remedy in cases of white spots around mucocutaneous junctions. There may also be fissures at the same site. Other indications are-craving for chalk, pencils etc mainly in children. This remedy, like Sepia removes the other symptoms but spots do not disappear completely.
8. Graphites and Calc-carb-also do come in the picture occasionally. Both are obese but their other symptoms are different. There is a history of suppressed itch in Graphites and irregular menses in a Calc-carb.
9. Ars-sulph-flav-Many doctors say that they are disappointed with the use of this remedy. The real cause is that they merely prescribe it as a specific for the disease. This is the most abused prescription. Very few books have given characteristic symptom of this drug. On the lookout for a good literature of the drug I was pleasantly surprised to find it in Kents Lesser Writings a detailed description on page 18. It states that if one find either mental, general or sexual symptoms along with the white spots the patient will definitely get well.
In addition to these I have used various other remedies like.
10. Cup-aceticum- in lower potencies. This is because copper is the chief source to produce melanin.
11. Cantharis- In our materia medica nothing is mentioned about skin discolouration. Dr R S Pareek who has given a great important to this remedy states that in burns the skin loses its pigmentation and Cantharis restores it.
12. Restinon- has also been recommended by a doctor friend of mine from Calcutta.
13. Psoralin- I have used this in potencies, as antidote in those cases where a lot of it was given by the allopathic doctors in crude form.
14. Carcinocin- must be used when there is a definite history of cancer in the patients family. Mrs E whose case has been mentioned was perfectly well after giving Carcinocin.
15. Bowel Nosodes- Morgan-bach, Morgan=gaertner, and Dyscentrico have been used by me with good success.
Statistics-
I have had 500 cases of Leucodermal from 1974 to 1992. Of these
10 percent case have been completely cured; 40 percent were relieved of 90 percent of the spots, 25 percent of cases are improving and another 25 percent have discontinued treatment or are incurable.

PREDICTIVE HOMEOPATHY
CHAPTER 3-4

USING THE FLOW-CHART OF ACUTES

Using the chart of acutes how to get best results
Activity
Activity-Thermal-Thirst Axis
Conscientious - Diligent
Diligent and Non-Diligent remedies

Using the 'CHART OF ACUTES' how to get best results.

For years, young Homoeopaths have found it difficult to put to practice the law of similars. Their dilemma begins right from the basis of prescriptions where there is no uniformity as every homoeopath interprets the law according to his own understanding. Some prescribe a similimum based only on mind, some only on p.q.r.s, some only on disease picture, and some only on organ involved. None of them represent man as a whole.

Remember as Homoeopaths we treat the 'Man in disease and not the disease in man'. As a homoeopath I am concerned with knowing what type of a man or what constitution I am dealing with. For that I would like to know how this particular constitution (patient) has behaved when attacked by bacteria or viruses. For example when you hit your fist on a wooden panel, glass panel, thermocol, coir, a cotton mattress, the reaction obtained by your 'hit' in terms of noise or behaviour of the panel concerned will make you aware of what material you are dealing with, even when blind folded. Similarly the reaction shown by a patient to the disease or infection will tell a physician what constitution he is dealing with. What changes occur or do not occur in the organism (constitution) shall in the first place be reflected by the activities of that affected constitution.

ACTIVITY

WHY THE WHOLE CHART IS BASED ON ACTIVITY?

ACT is a primary reflection of life or living being. Life means change. Anything in this world which does not change at all is death. Hence act or actions represent life. The speed and type of actions are specific for specific constitutions.

A Calcarea Carb, Baryta Carb, Helleborus, Gelsemium, Silicea etc. have slow ACTIVITIES (speed).

On the other hand drugs like Tarentula, Mercurius, Belladonna, Nux Vomica will have fast speed.

An Agaricus, Stramonium etc. will have jerky or gyratory actions respectively.

Such different actions and speeds are projected by different constitutions in original healthy forms, which albeit all Homoeopaths need to know and observe to become successful Homoeopaths. They also ought to observe the change if any in these 'Activities' when the respective constitution is affected. The new picture thus formed is known as an ACUTE PICTURE which is no doubt in relation to the original constitutional picture.

Thus if Opium - 'genetic constitution' suffers from fever or dysentery i.e. if affected by stronger dynamic influences it will bring about temporary change in the basic constitutional picture in terms of activity, thermals, thirst and will be giving rise invariably to a picture either of Aconite, or Ant-tart or Belladonna or Bryonia or Hyos or Nux Vomica or Nux Moschata, which are in relation to OPIUM. This may occur if and only if, Opium picture changes, which is not a must.

This change in activity, thermals, thirst and physical or mental symptoms which are thrown out by the constitution are basically compensatory in nature and is a natural effort by the organism to provide immunity and restore the sick to health. Hence more often than not the health is restored without the aid of any medicine, Homoeopathic or allopathic. If such recovery does not take place then and only it calls for an intervention.

In Homoeopathy our basic LAW OF PRESCRIPTION stands firm i.e. Similia Similibus Curantur. Hence the remedy required (if at all) shall be in keeping with our basic law a 'similimum' to the acute totality which of course should be based on activity, thermals, generals like, thirst and food and mental changed state or attitude and not only on physical symptoms.

The remedies chosen on these lines are so effective that they 'make' us obey all the cardinal principals i.e. not more than ONE remedy, ONE dose, is required to take care of a typhoid or a malaria or a lung abscess or a U. T. I. Not only the principles are abided by but also the pleasant sight of Hering's Law coming true each and every time is a bonanza received by the prescriber.

Above all the speed of recovery or cure is like the effect of a magical wand. Lung consolidation disappears within three days, pus cell count of 100 - 200/hpf in urine disappears within three days. The fevers come down be it typhoid or malaria, within 24hrs with general sense of well being and no subsequent weakness ensues. The patient gets his appetite back within 24hrs and resumes work the next day.

To bring about such results one has to prescribe as previously mentioned on activity, thermals, thirst and mentals which have changed. This is called as ACTIVITY-THERMAL-THIRST and Mental Axis

It being difficult to analyse for some especially new Homoeopaths I have simplified the analysis in the form of a FLOW-CHART.

The flow chart starts with ACTIVITY. This is further divided into
ACTIVITY -- INCREASED
ACTIVITY -- DECREASED
ACTIVITY -- NO CHANGE.

Every section is further divided into thermals
HOT or
CHILLY group of drugs.

Further differentiation is done on the basis of THIRSTY or THIRSTLESS to narrow down the number of drugs indicated.

The 'zeroing' down on the similimum is provided by short 3 line description of every remedy in the chart as REMEDY POINTERS. These remedy pointers form a 'TRIAD' of important symptoms, which are the base of the remedy. They have to be present in every case besides the thermo-general axis. These are given in the form of a TRIANGLE. A few more confirmatory points are also provided to ensure the remedy. Some of these have been evolved from practical experience. 3-line materia-medica pictures of 60 drugs have been provided in the materia-medica section of this book.

The generals provided in this book under the heading of the drug are during heat, fever, pain etc and may not be the same in chronic picture of the drug e. g Cina, Carbo-Veg, Kali-Carb, Lach, Bry are generally thirsty but during fevers become thirstless. Pulsatilla, Apis which are basically thirstless may become thirsty. Some drugs like Sulphur, Opium, Ant-Tart, Arsenic may be both thirsty or thirstless. There are many drugs which may appear in more than one place in the chart indicating that they should not be neglected even in other conditions.

Thus by selecting a
ACTIVITY-THERMAL-THIRST axis
Dull+Chilly+Thirstless (DCTL) or
Dull+Hot+Thirstless (DHTL) or
Dull+Chilly+Thirsty (DCT) or
Dull+Hot+Thirsty (DHT) or
MENTAL-PHYSICAL-VERBAL
Active+Hot+Thirsty (AHT)
Active+Hot+Thirstless (AHTL)
and adding to them the mental state and REMEDY POINTERS the SIMILIMUM is ready.

CONSCIENTIOUS AND DILIGENT

Dictionary meaning of Conscientious:- Scrupulous, showing care and precision.

Dictionary meaning of Diligent:- Hardworking, showing care and steady effort. The rubric or quality which I consider as Diligent is sometimes mentioned as Conscientious. This is an important quality of nature which can be used virtually as an eliminatory rubric to zero down the simillimum.

Obviously the question can be raised why is this so important? How can Diligent or Not Diligent 'point' make so much of a difference in deciding the simillimum? The answer is simple for people who understand the genetic make-up of a human being.

A human being or any organism as we all know, owes its existence, structure, tolerance, susceptibilities, nature, emotions, immunity, idiosyncrasy etc. etc. to the genetic code present in each an every cell-nucleus. How are all these genetic qualities expressed? Every character on the gene is expressed by synthesizing corresponding protein which is directly or indirectly responsible for the exhibition of that particular character. Every protein responsible for green color of iris or say a fair skin or curly hair, or angry nature or a reserved nature etc. is synthesized as per the inherited code. Hence we owe our entire existence, appearance, attitudes, sufferings etc. to the products (proteins) manufactured in this factory 'the cell'. The nucleus is the manufacturing machinery or plant. The Genes are the workers along with the D.N.A., R.N.A. The success or the failure of this factory rests entirely upon how diligently the workers work for the production. Their work is to synthesize the protein with care and effort (if the organism has to live). Never mind if one of the character on the genetic code leads to disobedience or avarice or even debauchery. So diligence does not mean exactly conscientious or anxiety of conscience or industrious etc., it only implies that there is an INNATE quality in the cell to do that thing which it is supposed to do when created. Every creation is created to progress and evolve. Evolution of man in the universe is synonymous to progress of life and every organism in the universe. Man and every living cell has to work for a living sincerely, and engulf as much knowledge as it can to deal with, to face life with success and finally evolve to a higher state, thus fulfilling the sole object of existence.

Thus DILIGENT stands for sincere, hard working, steady working, knowledge accumulating person.

How then to determine the diligence of a patient?

In infants - A child or an infant interested in going after a book or a magazine or paper and pen, trying to write with a pen or pencil in a paper is taken as CONSCIENTIOUS-DILIGENT.

In children -- A young boy or a teenager is considered DILIGENT if and only if, he or she has NEVER to be forced or even asked to study. He/she performs her duty and studies on his own. He/she never takes a leave or bunks her school. Wanting to go to school, despite high fever is also diligently-conscientious. Here we have to rule out diligence in a child who insists on going to school for fear of being punished or because of other vested interests.

In adults -- A middle aged man who has never taken a leave from his office or service in last 20 years; or a man who insists on going to office, not from avarice of getting money nor from fear of boss, is a diligent person.

In Working ladies - A lady who works for the family, cooking and doing daily chores despite having pains or suffering from fever can be safely taken as 'Diligent' provided she's not doing it because she says "who else will do it?" or "I'll get scolding from my in-laws or husband."

DILIGENCE of a cell shall make an organ or system function Diligently and subsequently the disease suffered by diligent patients shall be different from non-diligent patients. Thus these two Diligent and Non-diligent rubrics (formed by me) divide the constitutions in 2 major groups and are major eliminating factors in my practise.

Caution
The above rubrics of diligent and non-diligent should be used with caution it deserves.

CHAPTER 4

GOLDEN RULES OF ACUTE PRESCRIBING
Be a minimum prescriber
Be a Single remedy prescriber
Be a Single dose prescriber
Hunt for ACTIVITY-THERMAL-THIRST Axis
Know the Remedy Relationship
Look out if the moon is a 'round'
Expect fever, diarrhoeas or aggravation
Know Homoeopathic parameters
Do's and don'ts for the patients
Advice to doctors

GOLDEN RULES OF ACUTE PRESCRIBING

1) BE A MINIMUM PRESCRIBER: As every acute disease initiates a reaction in the body called 'immune-response', most of the infections or the acute illnesses are self-limiting. If and only if the organism or the body fails to recover within stipulated time, the physician is justified in interfering with a homoeopathic remedy assisting the body to recover.

Cure or recovery should be brought about by reaction of the organism (the patient's body) to our remedy rather than action of our remedy. Bringing down fevers with Ferrum-Phos, Belladonna, Aconite, Azadirachta, Eucalyptus, Methylene Blue etc. is wrong and may lead to suppressions. (Refer- Scientific explanation)

2. BE A SINGLE REMEDY PRESCRIBER: There cannot be TWO similimums of the given state holistically at one time in one organism. Any multi-remedy theory is a blatant violation of our Homoeopathic Cardinal Principles.

3) BE A SINGLE DOSE PRESCRIBER : If generals, mentals, and thermals of the drug coincide with the patient's changed state, all that is required is ONE DOSE to take care of any acute or serious illness.

Remember: If ONE DOSE does not initiate a curative process, your remedy is wrong. Throw away that remedy. Do not try to repeat and get results. Homoeopathy is such a gentle- touch art, that not more than one stimulus is required to produce recovery or cure!

4) HUNT FOR ACTIVITY-THERMAL-THIRST AXIS: Find out the activity of the affected patient. Find the right thermals of hot or chilly as shown later in this chapter.

Find out the mental changes. Find out the desires and aversions and the 'RIGHT SIMILIMUM' is ready to be prescribed.

5) KNOW REMEDY-RELATIONSHIPS ACUTE SIMILIMUM indicated, is most of the times related to the genetic constitutional similimum.

6) LOOK OUT IF THE MOON IS A 'ROUND': The constitutions which are very sensitive find themselves easily affected by Full Moon or New Moon. They fall ill, get fevers, pain in the joints, neuralgias, malaise, urticaria etc.

These problems generally arise two days before New Moon or Full Moon. Just wait and watch. Do not prescribe to these patients on these days. Predict to these patients that your cough or your pains will disappear in the morning at 10 a. m on a Full Moon day or New Moon day. Just sit back in comfort and win laurels or a title of ASTROLOGER-DOCTOR and enjoy! In this way, you increase your reputation as a 'knowledgeable' physician!

7) EXPECT fevers, diarrhoeas or aggravations on the first day and amelioration on the second day. Fever on the first day is a good sign. Loose motions on the first day is a good sign. AGGRAVATION of already existing fever or cough is a good sign. Remember feeling better on the first day but worse on the next day is a sign of wrong medicine unless there is a moon phase around in which case wait! But, all these should be accompanied by the betterment of generals or what I call as 'Homoeopathic Parameters'.

8) KNOW HOMOEOPATHIC PARAMETERS :
Homoeopathic parameters are exactly opposite of allopathic parameters. Since we treat the MAN in disease the parameters of improvement are the generals e.g..
a) Desire to work.
b) Stamina to work.
c) Desire to eat and drink.
d) Sleep.
e) Excretions i.e.: stool, urine and perspiration.

Know these parameters well and look out for their improvement in a patient rather than looking out for improvement in temperature, cough, headache, throat pain, nose-block etc. Slightest improvement in desire to work, stamina, appetite can be the most dependable signs of patient proceeding towards cure or recovery than even pathological reports of Hb increasing or W. B. C count coming to normal or Serum Bilirubin coming down in jaundice or X-rays showing improvement!

ADVICE TO PATIENTS

DO'S AND DON'TS

DO'S

a) Allow your patient to eat or drink anything including things which aggravate him e.g. cold drinks, ice-creams, sour, fruits like bananas etc. We are trying to immunize the patient against the allergic factors. What better test can one conduct?
b) Allow your patient wholesome food, as a normal diet helps to increase the energy within him to fight the illness and recover without weakness.
c) Allow your patient to work or do his normal duties, if he has interest and desire to do so.

DONT'S

a) Do not allow anything which is in anyway an anaesthesia to tissues or cells. Menthol or mint containing things like polo, colos, icy cool, vicks tablets may anaesthetise the laryngeal cells which may benumb their fighting properties i.e. stop the natural cough-reflex or sneezing reflex thus work against the homoeopathic action of increasing the immunity to cure. Spiritous drinks may also hamper cure in the same way.

b) Local application, not only of menthol, xylocaine etc, but also any medicated ointment including homoeopathic Calendula, Arnica, Graphites ointment should not be applied on the skin. These and other skin ointments may alter the Electro potential-Gradient at the cellular and tissue level of the skin, thereby obstructing our third excretory system i.e. skin (first two being stool and urine) from excreting toxins on to the skin. These local applications also including eyedrops, eardrops, chemical tattoos, hair conditioners, mehendi, anti - dandruff shampoos, medicated soaps etc. should not be allowed for best results. [only exception may be menthol in the toothpaste since every person is habituated to these toothpastes for years together and the homeostasis establishes itself since childhood with these pastes].

ADVICE TO DOCTORS

Have patience- don't repeat.

Homoeopathic medicine does not fail to work within 24 hrs giving either aggravation or amelioration when indicated. Let the body cure. Don't force a cure, just stimulate the body to cure. Herring's law is a compulsory knowledge which every Homoeopath has to have.

During the course of recovery, expect symptoms in lesser important spheres and do not interfere. Cure is in progress. Just watch it. e.g.

1) If cough disappears, expect sneezing and coryza or itching in the eyes - don't treat.

2) When sneezing or coryza disappear, expect itching or small eruptions on the skin which proceed from above downwards; from trunk and chest to upper and lower extremities.

3) When pain in the neck of cervical spondylitis disappears, expect pain in the lumbo-sacral region and then down to the knees - legs - ankle - foot and then toes. This may be followed by coryza or diarrhoea i.e. the toxins have come down from the mesoderm to the endoderm. Further, the same patient has to develop mild skin eruptions when the toxins come down to the ecto-dermal level.

WARNING:

Any skin eruptions should be mild and non-septic. A gross long standing septic or a destructive skin lesion is not what you should expect in exteriorization of the disease. It is not CURE.

Expect diseases to come down from syphilitic to sycotic to psoric types e.g. in skin lesions deep cracks and destructive ulcers should disappear first followed by disappearance of corns, callosities or warts followed lastly by acne and boils. (For further details refer Chart of 7 layers of Suppression).

A good knowledge of Chart of 7 layers of Suppression is essential to understand 'Cure' taking place in the body in embryological order of descendance.

Finally, if no result is obtained, take the generals again and reconsider the case. Perhaps, some 'causative factors like grief, shock, mortification, suppressed anger may lead you to a different group of drugs.

The drugs in the chart have been compiled from my experience of the last 25 years. They may yield a result of 70-80%.

There may be drugs indicated out of the chart. A short chapter on 'HINTS' attached in this book may help one to bridge the shortcomings in the flow chart.

Dr. Prafull Vijayakar's views about treating acute diseases are very clear cut. A few days back I recieved the forward e-mail from Dr Pravin Goswami, containing few attachments from DR Vijayakar's 'PREDICTIVE HOMOEOPATHY'. Every homeopathic dr must learn the lesson from him about his sincere advices.

'PREDICTIVE HOMOEOPATHY'
Chapter 1 & 2

Whenever Homoeopaths, even successful Homoeopaths encounter or come across cases of pneumonia and typhoid they prefer to just refer the case to an allopathic physician. Most of the time the reason forwarded is "Homoeopathy is a slow acting therapy'', ''it is meant for chronic diseases only not for emergencies''. ''You get the acute attack of this disease controlled with allopathy then we'll treat you to raise your immunity so that you don't get it again". This lame excuses put forward even by so called classical Homoeopaths, expose the limitations of those Homoeopaths and not Homoeopathy.

Remember Homoeopathy is a 'complete science'. Hence limitations and scope of Homoeopathy is the Homoeopath himself. The Homoeopath's knowledge is what falters. If not, it is the application of his knowledge which falters.

Many materia medicas have been written on therapeutics of fevers and acute diseases. Yet Homoeopaths find it difficult to get results in such cases. The reasons may be many, but the main reason is lawlessness i.e. all the 7 cardinal principles of Homoeopathy are not applied and the laws like that of Hering's, are bypassed.

CONCEPTS - OLD AND NEW

Aconite for fever---Podophylum for diarrhoea-

I call it an old concept because 90% of the Homoeopathic physicians have been using it for last 200 yrs. It is because of wrong applications of Homoeopathic principles while prescribing our remedies, that we have not been able to get good results. Hence we have remained second to allopathy. The new concept which I have proposed here, is not actually a new concept but a rejuvenation of the basic tenets of Homoeopathy as preached by the masters but not understood by many. I have devised a simple way of arriving at the similimum in acute cases. It is nothing but simplification of reaching the similimum without violating the seven cardinal principles of Homoeopathy.

The Old Concept - (A wrong application of knowledge.)

Acute diseases e.g. fevers, diarrhoeas, dysenteries or abdominal pains, neuralgias have been, up to date, treated with as much 'panic' as is proportionate to the severity and acuteness of the disease. I have been guilty of and party to the type of prescriptions prevailing in majority of homoeopathic circles in the earlier years of my practice.

Fevers were and are treated on non-homoeopathic principles with homoeopathic medicines e.g. Ferrum-phos 3x or 6x, Kali-mur 3x/6x, Nat-Mur 3x/6x or a combination of Belladonna, Aconite, Ferrum-phos or Eucalyptus, China, China-ars, etc. in 30 or 200 potencies or Azadirachta, Baptisia, Pyrogen etc. in mother tincture form repeated frequently.

Diarrhoeas are treated with Podophyllum, Aloes, Gratiola, Gambogia, Veratrum alb, Chinas, Arsenics, Croton-tig and all these repeated every hour or 2 hours or 3 hours depending upon the 'Mood' of the Homoeopath or the fixed formula of the homoeopath (a formula which he or she has had best results with). Wither similia……?

Such prescriptions are BLIND PRESCRIPTIONS. They NEVER give results - certainly not satisfactorily enough to boost anyone's morale. The fevers go down IF AT ALL, gradually from 103 degrees on first day to 102 degrees on 2nd day to 99 degrees on 3rd or 4th day and normal on the 5th day. This bringing down of fever is CERTAINLY NOT HOMOEOPATHIC result. The fever generally goes down because the acute infection has exhausted itself and the patient has recovered by himself! The physician who takes credit for this result, be it in fever or diarrhoea is oblivious of the fact or ignorant of the fact that the tremendous weakness and tiredness and bodyache or joint pains and loss of appetite which ensues is NOT A HOMOEOPATHIC RESULT. Any amount of explanation that "the weakness is naturally going to be there because of the 4 days of fever or loss of vital fluids in diarrhoeas, etc." is an 'excuse' especially when you see the 'glaring difference' when the patient has been treated with classical SINGLE DOSE THERAPY. In the first place the fevers or diarrhoeas or pains DO NOT and should not take more than 12 hours (at the most 24 hours) be it TYPHOID, be it PNEUMONIA, be it URINARY TRACT INFECTION with 100-200 pus cells in urine (such number of pus cells come to zero in a space of 3 days - a feat which any 4th generation antibiotic cannot perform.) Secondly the patient does not feel RUN-DOWN, weak or tired despite the high fever nor does he lose his appetite for food or stamina to work. Even patients with Widal test positive for typhoid upto 350 units have been seen to go to office and do normal work without being aware of the fact that that they are suffering from typhoid. And all this with fever responding to single dose of the indicated remedy within 24 hours! Chest X-rays follow-up of pneumonias show complete regression of lesions within 3 or 5 days (at the most) of the indicated remedy dose.

SINGLE DOSE CLASSICAL HOMOEOPATHIC treatment overshadows the old multi-dose, multi-drug treatment by miles!

In the old concept the doctor himself is not confident of the result.

In the New Concept doctor can 'PREDICT' by '9 a.m. tomorrow' you'll be fit to go for work etc. In the 'Old Concept' crutches of Allopathy are often needed.

In the 'New Concept' no crutches of allopathy etc. are needed.

In the 'Old Concept' NONE of the 7 CARDINAL Homoeopathic principles are being respected except the principles of drug dynamisation!(obviously since potencies are used.)

In My 'New Concept' NONE of the 7 CARDINAL Homoeopathic principles are violated!

In the 'Old Concept' Hering's Law is seldom seen.

In My 'New Concept' Hering's Law is a MUST in every result e.g. cough and fever gone - slight coryza has to follow, followed by transient itching on the skin.

Typhoid cure, is never and should never be followed by 'hair fall'. This is not what is meant by exteriorization.

Dysentery cure is never and should never be followed by backache or joint pains or muscular pains.

Reason: Hair-roots are embedded deep into the dermis.(Embryological off-shoot of Dermatome Mesoderm). Muscle pain, Backache or joint pain means inflammation of synovial membrane or bursae. [Embryologically originating from Myotome and Sclerotome (somites)] - Mesoderm.

Typhoid is enteritis - inflammation of intestines (Entera). Embryologically originating from Endoderm.
Looking at the embryological origin one can safely conclude that the disease has moved from Endoderm to Mesoderm which is definitely deeper in origin and more important. Hence, Alopecia after Typhoid is suppression. Hence Backache or joint pains after typhoid or dysentery is suppression.

One can safely assume or presume that in EACH and EVERY ACUTE ILLNESS [also] HERING'S LAW OF CURE HAS TO BE SEEN and if you don't, dear Homoeopath, you are going wrong somewhere in your application of the 7 cardinal principles.

ACUTE ILLNESSES

By acute disease we mean any disease or illness which can disturb the health of a person temporarily in a negative way. These include high fevers, acute pains and neuralgia's, acute infections either bacterial, viral or parasital. Most of these illnesses are SELF-LIMITING.

TYPES OF ACUTE ILLNESSES

(a) (c) (b)
Acute Infection Indisposition AcuteExacerbations
Of Chronic Diseases.

Viral fevers, TREATMENT Malarial paroxyms
Influenza, tonsilitis NOT Ulcerative collitis
Sore Throat, REQUIRED Pulmonary koch`s
Typhoid,
Pneumonia, Pneumonitis, constitutional
Lung Abscess required
Septicaemia, Food poisoning,
Infective diarrhoea,
Dysentry,
Urinary tract colics,
Infection Pleurisy.

Chart- shows list where 'chart of acutes' can be used.

Acute illnesses are of three types:
a) Non-recurring acute infections e. g. acute diarrhoea, dysenteries, high fever either viral, bacterial or parasital, e.g. typhoid, malaria, influenza. It may include pneumonia's, lung abscess, pleuritis, pleurisy, urinary tract infections.

b) Acute exacerbation of chronic e.g. Asthma, pulmonary koch's, chronic ulcerative colitis, relapsing malarial fevers,

c) Indispositions - like acidity, transient, malaise, coryza, gastric upsets due to overeating or heavy food, mild injuries and abrasions etc. are self-limiting and do not require any treatment.

The (b) group i.e. acute exacerbation of a chronic diseases should be strictly treated as a chronic case with genetic constitutional similimum. It does not warrant an acute remedy. The acute flow charts presented in this book should not be used to get results in such exacerbation. If used it might give you a temporary amelioration followed by aggravation of the disease. It might also lead to suppression.

The (a) group is the one which is under consideration here. The 'acute infections' are the ones which need acute treatment. This ACUTE TREATMENT is misunderstood by majority of Homoeopaths. Under the guise of acute treatment a lot of liberties are taken and any medicine unrelated to the constitution is selected on the basis of just one or two symptoms and prescribed. The 'rule' to remember is that any remedy which gets indicated in an acute stage is bound to be in mathematical relation with the genetic constitutional similimum. (For scientific explanation see Remedy -Relationship.)

Distribution of Steroid like Compounds in Plant Flora

Medicinal herbs constitute an effective source of traditional (Ayurvedic, Unani and Homeopathy) and modern medicine. The plant is a biosynthetic laboratory, not only for chemical compounds, but also a multitude of compounds like glycosides, alkaloids etc. These exert physiological and therapeutic effect. The compounds that are responsible for medicinal property of the drug are usually secondary metabolites. Alkaloids, glycosides, neutral principles, resins, oleoresins, sesquiterpene lactones are some of the common active constituents of medicinal herbs. The article reviews distribution of steroid like compounds and their pharmacological importance.
1The practice of medicinal herbs for treating the diseases is very well known from ancient times. There are number of synthetic medicines which have been derived from medicinal herbs. Digioxin, Aspirin, Reserpine, Ephedrine, Quinine, Vincristine, Vinblastine, Taxol, Artemisinin, Hypericin, Silymarin are some noteworthy examples and their mechanism of action is beyond doubt as far as efficacy is concerned. Number of studies is available to show their effectiveness. These are regarded as active constituents of the herbs and are present in standardized form in the herbal extracts, if not isolated as single entity.
In addition to the alkaloids, glycosides, resins, oleo-resins, aromatic & volatile oils, neutral principles etc, a number of other compounds are also known to exists in plant flora which are responsible for curative action of the herbs, although are relatively less known compounds. Recently some light has been thrown on steroid like compounds present in number of medicinal herbs. Chemically the compounds are known as sterols and are considered to be derivatives of the steroids. They resemble in structure with steroids and modern clinical studies have supported their role as anti inflammatory and analgesic agents.
2Beta -sitosterol is the most commonly studied sterol compound isolated from number of medicinal herbs and it has shown effectiveness in reducing serum cholesterol levels. 3Modern studies have indicated the usefulness of beta-sitosterol in benign prostate hypertrophy and the compound has been detected in Serenoa Repens commonly known as Saw Palmetto. 4The medicinal herb has been traditionally used in treating prostate symptoms the clinical trials have shown promise in stages 1 & 2 in reducing difficulties associated with BPH but it has nothing to do with enlarged size of the gland. In addition the medicinal herb is known to contain sterols including beta sitosterol-3-o-glycosides, beta-sitisterol-3-o-glycosides, beta-sitosterol-fatty acid esters and their glycosides.
5,6,7 Disogenin is another compound present in number of herbs like Hedichyum spicatum, Trigonella foenum- graecum, Pueraria tuberosa & Dioscorea villosa. Oral contraceptives & sex hormones are derived from Disogenin. It is extracted from medicinal herbs as well as prepared commercially. Due to wide the distribution of the compound in above herbs, they have been used in various types of sexual disorders like impotency. 8Ruscogenins are other compounds present in Yucca liliaceae that are used in treating pain and inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism. Yucca filamentosa is other known species, which contains Ruscogenin as active principle. 9,10Ruscogenins are also present in Ruscus aculeatus and in animal tests; there was increase in venous tone and an electrolyte-like reaction on the cell wall of the capillaries.
Smilax officinalis is medicinal herb that is known to contain steroid like compounds-saponin glycosides and according to some researchers actually the herb contains male hormones. 11It also has been used in herbal medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent in curing arthritis and rheumatism. Rubus idaeus, commonly called as raspberry, is also known to contain such type of compounds.
12 Phyto-estrogens are group of pharmacologically active compounds present in Asparagus officinalis where they are known as Asparagosides A, B, D, F, G, H $I [16]. Although the herb finds application in female sexual disorders but effectiveness for the claimed application has not been sufficiently documented. 13In Asparagus adscendens, active compounds are called Shatavarins 1-4 and in clinical studies they shown estrogen like activity. According to Mitchell Deborah these phyto-estrogens inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihyrotestosterone, thereby increasing the count of testosterone in the body. Co- incidentally the role of the herb has been described in old texts of Ayurveda as sexual tonic. Coriander sativum [commonly known as fennel] also contains phyto- estrogens and has shown promise in treating premenstrual syndrome. Some glycosides on hydrolysis produce aglycones like gitogenin and tigogenin, which also are being used in steroid synthesis.
14 Balsamdendron commiphora mukul commonly known as Guggul contains special group of compounds called Guggulsterones, which range from E to Z. 15,16,17They are known as active principle of the herb and accounts for the use of the herb in hyperlipidemia and arthritis. 18Withania sominifera commonly known as Ashwagandha contain pharmacologically active compounds called Withanolides, which are considered to be responsible for various applications of the herb as adaptogen and immunomodulator. 19Withaferin-A is the most important group of Withanolide and has shown promise as potent anti cancer agent. 20The Withanolides are basically steriod lactones and various types have been isolated.
A special group of compounds called cardioactive steroids [better known as cardiac glycosides] deserves special mention. Digitalis purpurea, Stropanthus gratus and Urginea indica are reputed remedies as cardiac tonics. Clinically they find application in congestive cardiac failure. All of them contain steroid saponins as active constituents. 21Calotropis procera is known to contain cardioactive glycoside calotropine, which has shown an antitumor effect in vitro on human epidermiod carcinoma cells of the rhinopharynx. Besides it also acts as expectorant and diuretic.
In Homeopathic system of medicine, Convallaria majalis is a reputed remedy in various heart diseases. It also contains cardioactive steroid glycosides, which vary in the herb according to geographical source, and main active constituents are convalloside, convallatoxin and convallatoxol. In clinical studies they have shown positive inotropic effect on the myocardium and it lowers the elevated left ventricular pressure as well pathologically raised venous pressure.
Glycyrrhiza glabra works like steroids but without any side effects. The roots contain glycrrhizin and allied compounds. Research has indicated that it is anti inflammatory, hel;ps in biosynthesis of cholestrol and also promotes excretion of cholestrol.
From above it can be concluded that that sterol compounds are less known for their medicinal importance. Some of them have been isolated and researchers are studying hard to find their exact mode of action. In future a number of compounds can be expected from the sterols that can provide us with life saving drugs. The only need of the hour is to investigate the compounds with open mind so that maximum benefit can be withdrawn from them.

REPETITION OF DOSE

The repetition of the remedy is always a controversial issue & under constant debate in homeopathy. There is no clear-cut rule that can be laid down, and it is very difficult thing to teach and to understand; rather it can only come by experience and by using powers of observation .
The safe rule to follow is, never repeat the dose after reaction begins.
If more than one dose is necessary repeat the dose until there is improvement and then stop; more doses will only retard the cure. When reaction is taking place never repeat the remedy; when reaction ceases or improvement stops, the remedy may be repeated.

1.-Hahnemann’s view on repetition:-
We find certain rules given us for the repetition of the remedy in Chronic Diseases and Hahnemann discusses these on pages 209-213, in speaking of the third mistake in the treatment of diseases. Quoting in part, we find, on page 209: “The third leading mistake that the Homoeopathic physician cannot too carefully or steadfastly avoid is in hastily and thoughtlessly giving some other medicine ... but if once a medicine ... is acting well and usefully, which is seen by the eight or tenth day, then an hour or even half a day may come when a modern homoeopathic aggravation again takes place. The good results may not appear in their best light before the twenty-fourth or thirtieth day. The dose will probably have then exhausted its favorable action about the fortieth or fiftieth day, and before that time it would be injudicious and an obstruction to the progress of the cure to give any other medicine. Experience teaches that a cure cannot be accomplished more quickly and surely than by allowing the suitable antipsoric to continue its action so long as improvement continues ... Whoever can restrain his impatience as to this point will reach his object the more surely and the more certainly ... periods of aggravation will occur, but so long as only the original ailments are renewed and no new, severe symptoms present themselves, they show a continuing improvement, being homoeopathic aggravations which do not hinder but advance the cure. The physician must; therefore, in chronic diseases, allow all antipsoric remedies to act thirty, forty or even fifty and more days by themselves, so long as they continue to improve the diseased state perceptibly to the acute observer, even though gradually; for so long the good effects continue with the indicated doses and these must not be disturbed and checked by any new remedy.”
In footnote, page 212, we find: “But he who will not allow himself to be convinced of this and imitate what I now teach, he who is not willing to imitate it exactly, can leave the most important chronic diseases uncured.”
2:- Kent’s Observation:-
From the study of the Organon and the Chronic Diseases, we learn that there are certain other things that we may expect after the prescription has been made.Kent gives these observations as eleven in number. I will simply give them without further comment, as an explanation may be found in Kent’s Lectures on Homoeopathic Philosophy.
Following the dose one of the following results is to be expected:
1st. A rapid cure will take place with no aggravation of symptoms.
2d. The aggravation will be rapid, short and strong, and is followed by rapid improvement of the patient.
3d. A long aggravation with final and slow improvement of patient.
4th. A long aggravation with final decline of patient.
5th. Full time amelioration of symptoms with no special relief of patient.
6th. Amelioration comes first and aggravation come afterward.
7th. Too short relief of symptoms.
8th. Old symptoms are seen to appear.
9th. New symptoms appearing after the remedy is given.
10th. Patients who prove every remedy given.
11th. That symptoms take the wrong direction.

. Yesterday I was reading an article of Dr Rajan Sankaran in Homeopathic Links & this article impressed me a lot. I am quoting the whole text of this article from Homeopathic Links.

3:- Dr Rajan Shankaran’s view:-

Dr Gerhardus Lang, M.D., posed a question to Rajan Sankaran: How often can we repeat a dose? Dear Rajan Sankaran, you wrote in your book The Spirit of Homoeopathy that we have to repeat when the dose is exhausted. In chapt. 25 you describe a case of Aurum met. and you gave him Aur.m.200 and 1 M over a period of a year in weekly doses. I should like to know if Aurum was always exhausted after a week and if you did really observe the patient to be sure if the dose was exhausted.

Rajan Sankaran, Bombay :
I have, in the past ten years of practice, in some chronic cases of definite structural pathology, repeated the dose of the indicated remedy despite amelioration. I did this because I found that sometimes by not repeating the dose of the medicine progress comes to a standstill and despite the patient feeling better the pathology remains the same. Further, I found that such repetition did not seem to create any kind of trouble. I must also state that in some cases I found even chronic structural pathology reversing with a single dose. I therefore started thinking in which case a repetition is needed and in which case it is not needed. My conclusions are as follows:
One of the cases I would definitely repeat regularly would be osteoarthritis that requires a remedy like Calc.fluor. A similar example would be a case like hypertension which is chronic and persistent. A third example would be a case of vitiligo. These kind of cases which share a common feature, namely they are chronic and slow in progression. I found in such cases that even though a single dose acts, its action seems to stop after some days or weeks and another dose takes it one step forward, its action lasting for another few weeks and so forth. Gradually I started experimenting with repeating doses even when the person was improving as if anticipating that the dose would exhaust its action. I found this kept the progress uninterrupted. It seemed to depend upon the onset of pathology. If the onset was slow and gradual, repetition was needed in days or weeks. If the onset was sudden and the exciting factor was not there, then repetition was not needed, e.g. sprain or an injury or a fright etc. If the exciting factor was present e.g. certain severe infective pathology as in severe tonsillitis, severe pneumonia, typhoid etc. then repetition would be called for every few hours. The same happens in chronic cases especially in cases where the exciting factor is found in the life of a person, these cases require definite repetition. One must remember that an exciting factor is one that excites a sick person - the same factor may not excite healthy people.
Another factor that influences repetition is excitability of the root within. If the root is strong, the dose exhausts its action quite soon. The excitability of the root can be judged by how sensitive the person is to the exciting factor. Taking all these above factors into consideration, when we look at the case of Aur. given in my book we find
1) Very excitable Aurum root as shown in the fact that increased responsibility excited in him a intense state of Aurum.
2) Such a responsibility was still present (felt by him) as a continuous exciting factor.
3) The pathology was slow and gradual showing the need of repetition. Pathology in the form of IHD (Ischaemic Heart Disease) HT (Hypertension) and diabetes and also peripheral vascular disease - all slow progressive pathology which I feel cannot be reversed by a single dose.
In such cases I can anticipate that the dose will be exhausted very soon. I judge how long to wait by seeing how long the first dose lasts. When its action is over I repeat the dose at the same interval each time, even before the improvement stops. If I know that the first dose lasted two weeks I would repeat the remedy once in 12 days in anticipation.
From experience I found that if other things are constant, i.e. there is no new addition or subtraction of exciting factors, the dose acts for almost the same amount of time. There comes a point, after a few days, months or years, where the dose stops acting or acts for a much shorter time. This is the time to raise the potency. Each time the potency is raised it is advisable to again wait and watch for how long the dose of the new potency works and to repeat at this interval.
The logic of repetition.
What I have stated is from clinical experience of innumerable cases. I have thought about this phenomenon and explain it thus:
1) What is repetition?
Repetition is giving a reminder (an awareness) and is needed as fast as the person forgets the previous lesson. Who is likely to forget and need a reminder? The one who has fallen into such a pattern that just telling him once doesn't make enough impression. There is a tendency to fall into the same pattern again and again and we see this in a chronic or acute case which has a strong exciting factor.
For example, a person coming for an interview is nervous for 3 days before. You give an awareness and his nervousness recedes until he is faced with the interview. His nervousness returns and he needs to be reminded again. As the period of interview comes closer and closer he needs repeated doses of awareness. So, in such a case you might have to repeat Gelsemium again and again.
Where is repetition not required?
An acute where the exciting factor which is not repeated, can easily be dealt with in one dose. Even a chronic case which began with one exciting factor which is no longer there needs very little repetition, I have seen this with Carcinosin. E.g. Carc. is a situation of a child where the parents are asking for perfection and the child fits into this pattern, but if in adulthood this exciting factors no longer exists a single awareness is enough. Here the exciting factor doesn't exist in the present, and little or no repetition is necessary. If you see a case of Calc.fluor where the fellow is struggling about money, with an excitable root from the past plus exciting factors from present, it is impossible to cure with a single dose and the dose will exhaust its action very soon. Even when there is no pathology, but there is only a prominent state, repetition may be needed if the state has come from a very excitable root and there are continual exciting factors around e.g. we see a very strong Bar- carb child coming from a very strong Bar-carb mother. This child is slow dull, laughed at, criticised which makes him even more vulnerable to criticism. People start laughing at him, his family itself considers him an idiot, this child surely requires repetition of Bar-carb very often to get out of this state. The same child in the family which is encouraging and doesn't laugh at him will require less repetition of Bar-carb. Similarly if the child's state has resulted from a strong state of the mother during pregnancy this child is likely to require repetition. If the child's present state resulted from some incident in the child's own past, one isolated incident like fright, this child is not likely to require repetition.
"It is impractical to repeat the same unchanged dose of a remedy once, not to mention its frequent repetition (and at short intervals in order not to delay the cure). The vital principle does not accept such unchanged doses without resistance, that is, without other symptoms of the medicine to manifest themselves than those similar to the disease to be cured, because the former dose has already accomplished the expected change in the vital principle and a second dynamically wholly similar, unchanged dose of the same medicine no longer finds, therefore, the same conditions of the vital force. The patient may indeed be made sick in another way by receiving other such unchanged doses, even sicker than he was, for now only those symptoms of the given remedy remain active which were not homoeopathic to the original disease, hence no step towards cure can follow, only a true aggravation of the condition of the patient. But if the succeeding dose is changed slightly every time, namely potentised somewhat higher then the vital principle may be altered without difficulty by the same medicine (the sensation of the natural disease diminishing) and thus the cure brought nearer" - said Hahnemann in the Organon. This goes against not only my experience, but that of many homoeopaths. As far as I know no homoeopath has refrained from repeating the same dose and so not only Hahnemann's explanation goes beyond logic but goes beyond experience also.

WHO puts final stamp of approval on homeopathy

WHO recognition for homeopathySunday December 25 2005 00:00 IST THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Deviating from the trend of rejecting homeopathy treatment and medicine as mere placebos, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that homeopathy is the second-most used medical system internationally.“Clinical trials have proved that this method of treatment has been successful if the practitioners have taken into account the individual holistic nature of the patient before opting for homeopathy,” says Dr T N Sreedhara Kurup, assistant director in charge of the Central Research Institute for Homeopathy. Different patients will receive different treatments for the same disease making it difficult to conduct randomised control trials, he said.“Homeopathy is that stream of medicine which prescribes medicines suitable to the individual and the cost of treatment is affordable when compared to allopathy. Besides, it is claimed that homeopathic medicines are devoid of any harmful side-effects,” says Dr Ravi M Nair, a homeopathy specialist.About 50 crore people rely on homeopathy treatment in the world. As a system of medicine, it draws support from over lakhs of doctors, teaching institutions and universities where homeopathy is taught. Research centres and manufacturing units with focus on developing newer drugs for treatment of diseases provide ample proof that homeopathic medicines are not mere placebos, Nair said

HOMEOPATHY PRESCRIBED ALLOPATHICALLY

A few years back I saw the dramatic representation by NISHA in ABC FORUM. At that time I saved it & yesterday when I was searching the documents, I suddenly came across the wonderful script, ‘Homeopathy prescribed Allopathically’
Why do u not enjoy the script?

Homeopathy prescribed Allopathically - This for That.
Let all Homeopath prescriber’s prescribe all Homeo medicines on the policies of Allopathy. That is “THIS FOR THAT” and so CON’VENIENT “THAT FOR THIS” . Why bother for Repertorisation. Why bother for similimum and provings. Why bother for the root cause and why bother for constitution and why bother understanding the Organon (Bible of homeopathy).
A small play to temporary’ly break the monotonic postings of this forum :
AFTER Kent (USA) and Boenninghausen (Germany) invented the repertories and Hahnemann (Germany) invented the Homeopathic world.
STAGE : One. PART : One. LIGHTS. aaaACTION.
Hahnemann, Kent, Boenninghausen start squirming together, in their caskets, six feet under the compacted earth.
Hahnemann : Hey, Why did I not think of this before ?
Kent : Think of what ? Arnica for Hair growth ? Yeah Why ?
Boenninghausen : (seriously) or for deep refreshing Sleep. ? Yeah Why ?
Hahnemann : sob … sob … my 50 years of invention gone down the drain.
Boenninghausen : Would you re-pharse that to “Gone with the Wind”. Please be more civil.
Kent : Atleast, you could have tried giving Arnica, as a placiebo for Hair Growth.
Boenninghausen : (accusingly) don’t forget its use as a palliative for the refreshingly deep beauty sleep.
Hahnemann : I guess, I over-slept over Arnica. How could I miss out on the Arnica provings. Must be my acidity & my obesity.
Boenninghausen : (sneeringly) Hey, that’s OBESITY or FAT, I see on your middle.
Kent : You must take NatriumPhos-6X and you will loose (not lose) 1 kilo every week.
Boenninghausen : (suspiciously) Hey, isn’t that the one you discovered on 25th december 2004.
Kent : Yeah….. Yeah. I gifted my discovery to this world, on christmas day.
Boenninghausen : (sighhh) Great ..isn’t it. Just like Santa Claus, the ho-ho-ho-go man who always brings us gifts on christmas day.
Boenninghausen : (with a far away look - nostalgically starts singing)
— Jingle bell … Jingle Bell …. Jingle all the way …
—– Santa Claus is coming along, riding on a sledge.
—— HEYyy … Jingle Bell …… Jingle Bell…… Jingle all the way ……
Hahnemann : Will it work on my hippopotamus. The doorway is getting too narrow for him.
Kent : Let’s all take Arnica-6 and go for sleep.
Boenninghausen : (urgently) Yes. Yes ….. But let’s first fizzle and succucess it … hmmm … how many times was it. Hold it … I’ll take Arnica-30 and not Arnica-6. I’ll bang the water bottle against my casket.
Hahnemann : Squirm … Squirm … There isn’t enough room in this casket.
Kent : Ohh nooo … my bottle did’nt fizzle.
Boenninghausen : (squintingly) … Wow … I just increased the dilution by 0.007 times.
Kent : Hey how un-hahnemann’ien ……. that’s a discovery. What a dilution. What a BOND. What a secret service to humanity.
Boenninghausen : (hissess) Yeeeesssss. This is “my discovery” and “I gift” it to this world.
Kent : Which world … below this earth world or above this earth world ?
Hahnemann : Hey …. Hey … What about me ? I proved the Arnica.
Kent : Who are you ?
Boenninghausen : (staringly) forget your dilution. Homeopathy is re-written, Herewith.
Hahnemann : (succumbs) OoohKkay. Can I borrow some Arnica from your bottle. I have balded from the top.
Kent : That’s good. Now you are talking our lingo.
Boenninghausen : (obsessingly) Hope “my discovery” is written in Gold letters on a Platinum plate.
Kent : DONE ……. let’s all say “AMEN”
(special appearance) HERING : AMEN

OBSCESSIVE COMPULSIVE NEUROSIS & HOMEOPATHY

Definition and Classification

OCD falls under the broad category of anxiety disorders, which encompasses conditions such as panic disorder, social phobia, and posttraumatic stress disorder (DSM-IV).
The patients have recurrent flow of thoughts, they know thoughts are absurd and try to resist but they fail. The condition is charcterised by :

a)Anxious preoccupation with some obscessive idea. The patient may ask himself over and over again some religious or metaphysical questions, e.g. "what was the begining of everything?" Some are disturbed by the reiteration of certain words or phrases in their mind.
(b) Morbid compulsions: fears associated with the obscessive ideas e.g, a fear of dirt and contamination may necessiate constant washing and scrubbing of the skin to ensure cleanliness. Patients may feel compelled to touch objects,to do things in a certain order,to steal something intrinisically worthless,(kleptomania),to commit homicidal acts or sexual assaults, to take alcohol (dipsomania) or drugs..

Some common obsessions :

* Fear of dirt or germs
* Disgust with bodily waste or fluids
* Concern with order, symmetry (balance) and exactness
* Worry that a task has been done poorly, even when the person knows this is not true
* Fear of thinking evil or sinful thoughts
* Thinking about certain sounds, images, words or numbers all the time
* Need for constant reassurance
* Fear of harming a family member or friend
Compulsions are repetitive behaviors (rituals) or mental acts that reduce the anxiety that accompanies an obsession. The person feels driven to perform them in response to their obsession, or according to rules that must be rigidly applied.
Some common compulsions include:
* Cleaning and grooming, such as washing hands, showering or brushing teeth over and over again
* Checking drawers, door locks and appliances to be sure they are shut, locked or turned off
* Repeating, such as going in and out of a door, sitting down and getting up from a chair, or touching certain objects several times
* Ordering and arranging items in certain ways
* Counting over and over to a certain number
* Saving newspapers, mail or containers when they are no longer needed

These obsessions or compulsions cause marked distress, are time consuming (>1 hour a day), or significantly interfere with the person's normal routine, occupation (or academic) functioning, or usual social activities or relationships.

Aetiology:-

There is no single, proven cause of OCD.

1-There are no of factors responsible for OCD, like genectics, personality development, and how a person reacts to the environment around them.

2 -It affects men and women equally and knows no geographic, ethnic, or economic boundaries.

3-Typically, OCD begins in adolescence to young adult life, but at least a third of cases of adult OCD start in childhood. But they are rarely to be taken seriously then.

4- Interestingly, about 20-30% of OCD patients report a past history of tics.

Treatments

OCD was once thought to be untreatable, but today's medicine can help most individuals achieve meaningful long-term symptom relief. Some individuals have even reported being cured of OCD. Individuals whose symptoms persist, make no sense, cause much distress, or interfere with functioning, need to seek clinical help. Once the diagnosis is made, appropriate treatment can be prescribed.

Here I am dealing with homeopathic treatment It is important to remember that in treating OCD, as in any condition, not to overly focus on the common symptoms of the disorder, but to focus on what is individuating in the case," . "This means that the homeopath must be aware of the common symptoms of OCD." He should not to be discouraged with the pace of healing. The cure is often slow in OCD and the possibility of a cure may take as long as a year.

The main rubrics under obscession are taken from 'complete repertory'. The grading of symptoms is given according to the most effective use in such condition.
